MUTUAL AID TRAINING

Monday, March 21, 2011  Our department was invited to participate in a joint training with the Pelican Lake and Monico Fire Departments.  Using an acquired structure, which will be used for a training burn later on, we conducted search and rescue drills.

Utilizing a smoke machine, visibility inside the structure was near zero as crews had to search and find victims while dealing with lost team members and mayday calls.  The on-scene rapid intervention team was put to use several times to locate and remove disoriented firefighters.

Firefighters also practiced the Modified Denver Drill utilizing a backboard and rope to remove a firefighter through a window.  This proved to be very successful while lessening the chance of injuries to the firefighter being removed.

This was an excellent training with a great group and we look forward to working with them in the coming months.

Two firefighters donned ice rescue suits and stood by in the water while people jumped to assist in case someone had trouble getting out.  It seemed everyone had a good time and benefited a great cause.

HILLTOP ROAD MVA

Tuesday, March 15, 2011  The department was dispatched for a report of a bad accident on Hilltop Road.  First arriving units found a single car that had left the roadway and struck several trees.  The driver was not badly injured and was out of the vehicle upon our arrival.

The car, traveling at a high rate of speed, left the road sideways clipping off several trees.  The car then hit a tree with the back end and spun around to rest on its wheels.  Units remained on scene until the car had been removed.  The driver was transported to St Mary's Hospital to be evaluated fro injuries.

SPIRIT ANNOUNCES RHINELANDER-BASED HELICOPTER

Tuesday, March 15, 2011  Ministry Spirit Medical Transportation Announces Rhinelander-based Helicopter

(Northern Wisconsin) Ministry Health Care announced that its Ministry Spirit Medical Transportation Service (Spirit) will begin to operate a helicopter ambulance from a Ministry Saint Mary’s Hospital base in Rhinelander in June, 2011.

In 2010, Spirit was unable to respond to 190 requests for air transport services due to other transports being already in process or to the aircraft being out of service for maintenance. 61% of these requests originated in the Northwoods.

The placement of an additional helicopter in Rhinelander will increase the availability and the effective range of the service, and it will reduce the response time to Northwoods patients. For more information a fact sheet for both helicopters have been developed.

“Time is a critical factor in the outcome of treatment for trauma, heart attack, and stroke victims, “ said Dr. Heong P’ng, Medical Director of the Spirit Ministry Medical Transportation service. “Basing a helicopter in the Northwoods will dramatically reduce the time it takes to transport patients to the region’s trauma and specialty referral centers in Marshfield and Weston/Wausau.”

Northern Region CEO and President of Ministry Sacred Heart and Saint Mary’s Hospitals, Monica Hilt, noted that “this is evidence of Ministry’s continued commitment and willingness to invest in appropriate technology and resources that contribute to the cost-effective delivery of best-practice outcomes to our patients and the communities we serve.”

Ministry’s Spirit currently provides air and inter-facility ground ambulance transportation services to residents of central and northern Wisconsin and the upper peninsula of Michigan. The service’s existing EC 145 helicopter is dispatched from Ministry Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield, while its ground ambulances operate from dispatch centers in Marshfield, Stevens Point, Weston, Woodruff, and Rhinelander. Its Weston base at Ministry Saint Clare’s Hospital also includes an advanced life support intercept service that supports the paramedic staffed ambulances of Weston and surrounding communities.

The Ministry Spirit aircraft are owned and operated by Air Methods, of Englewood, Colorado. Air Methods expects the Rhinelander-based AS350 helicopter to be in service by June 1, 2011. Flight nurses and other medical personnel are employed by Ministry Health Care.

The Spirit Medical Transportation Service works closely with first responders, emergency medical personnel and other medical professionals throughout the region to keep patients first. It is operated by Ministry Health Care, an integrated system of hospitals, clinics, and related services that are sponsored by the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother. The system’s operations include 15 hospitals and 52 clinics that serve communities throughout central and northern Wisconsin, and southeastern Minnesota. Ministry’s mission as a Catholic health care system is to further the healing ministry of Jesus by continually improving the health and well-being of all people, especially the poor, in the communities it serves.

MEDICAL ALERT JEWELRY

Saturday, February 19, 2011  When you call 911 for your emergency there are many wheels that begin to turn almost instantly: ambulances are dispatched, police officers are called to your system, and a rapid response is initiated by other providers.  Calling 911 for  yourself or a loved one is a very stressful situation, and we as emergency medical responders are trained in assessing you and your loved ones, and treating the medical conditions that we find.

But how can you help us on scene?

Devices that are recognized throughout medicine such as the Medical Alert Bracelet or Medical Alert Necklace are becoming more common for patients with potentially lethal allergies and medical conditions.  These pieces of jewelry give us vital information to your care, and provide that information even if you’re not breathing.  These badges can be customized to list allergies, medical conditions, or even resuscitation preferences.

Talk with your doctor, or local emergency medical provider for more information on how these bracelets and necklaces can improve our awareness and identification of your medical history.
