NICOLET COLLEGE ALARM

Wednesday, February 1, 2012  Engine 1 and Engine 2 responded to Nicolet College for a reported fire alarm at the Northwoods Center.  Nothing was found in the building and after doing a little investigating, it was determined a small amount of smoke from a pan set off a smoke detector.  Students were let back in the building and firefighters cleared the scene in about 15 minutes.

HIGHWAY 8 ROLLOVER

Monday, January 23, 2012  Rescue 1 and Tac 1 responded to a one vehicle rollover on Highway 8 just West of Highway 8 Wayside.  A pickup truck traveling Westbound lost control and entered the opposite ditch rolling over.  The lone occupant was not injured, but as a precaution was checked over by Oneida County Medic One.  Crews remained on scene for traffic control while the vehicle was being removed.

MUTUAL AID CHIMNEY FIRE

Monday, January 23, 2012  Our department responded as automatic mutual aid to the Town of Pine Lake for a chimney fire on Cross Country Road.  Due to the extreme height and the slippery new fallen snow, our ladder truck was used to reach the top of the chimney.  The fire was contained to the chimney with no extension into the house.

Engine 1 and Tanker 2 also responded.  Units were on scene approx. an hour and a half.

SNOWSHOE RACE STANDBY

Saturday, January 14, 2012  Members from our department were on standby for the RASTA (Rhinelander Area Silent Trails Association) snowshoe race held at Holiday Acres.  Several first responders were on hand in case of any injuries.  The race went off without a hitch and it appeared everyone had a good time.

HAVE A SAFE HOLIDAY SEASON

Wednesday, December 21, 2011  T'was the night before Christmas, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.   When down through the chimney, all covered with soot, came the Spirit of Fire, an ugly galoot.

His eyes glowed like embers, his features were stern.  As he looked around for something to burn.  What he saw made him grumble, his anger grew higher, for there wasn't a thing that would start a good fire.

No door had been blocked by the big Christmas tree,  it stood in the corner, leaving passageways free.  The lights that glow brightly for Betty and Tim, had been hung with precaution so none touched a limb.

All the wiring was new, not a break could be seen.  And wet sand at its base kept the tree nice and green.  The tree had been trimmed by a mother insistant, that the ornaments used should be fire resistant.

The mother had known the things to avoid, like cotton and paper and plain celluloid.  Rock wool, metal icicles and trinkets of glass, gave life to the tree - it really had class.

And would you believe it, right next to the tree, was a suitable box for holding debris.  A place to hold wrappings of paper and string, from all the gifts that Santa might bring.

The ugly galoot was so mad he could bust, as he climbed up the chimney in utter disgust.  For the folks in this home had paid close attention, to all of the rules of good fire prevention.

DONATION TO NATH

Thursday, December 15, 2011  We collected donations for the Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing at our annual Christmas party when Santa visited the fire station.  The donations included such things as canned goods, boxed food, laundry supplies, candy bars and personal hygiene products.  We are always happy to help out the community in any way we can.

SANTA AT THE STATION

Saturday, December 10, 2011  Santa Claus arrived aboard a fire engine much to the delight of everyone gathered to meet him.   Kids had the opportunity to sit on Santa's lap and tell him what they wanted for Christmas.  Department members provided games, and goodie bags for all the kids along with lunch for everyone.  Santa enjoyed his visit at Pelican Fire & Rescue and said he will make sure he stops by again next year!
